LCD Television

The first computer made was the size of a large room and over the years, the size of a computer has come down to the size of a pocket book, literally! This holds true in the case of a television technology too. Gone are the days when we had to assign a large wall unit to accommodate the television. As technology improved over the years, it has made it possible for us to simply mount a sleek television onto the wall. And this is called a LCD Television.

A LCD television is an acronym for a liquid crystal display television. It uses the liquid crystal display technology to create the images. Equipped with this type of technology, the LCD is available in much larger sizes than the regular televisions and they are much lighter in weight as well. Hence, they are proven to be much more practical than the regular CRTs. This is because even the cost of manufacturing these is lesser and hence they continue to rule the market.

The LCD television panel is made up of two layers. They are made using polarised glass and stuck together. The layers are applied with special polymers to keep the liquid crystals intact. Then electric current is sent through these crystals. These crystals then pass light or block light to create particular images.

However, it is a known fact that the LCD crystals are not the ones to produce light on their own. Hence, a light source such as a fluorescent light or LED light bulb is required for the image to be created. And only then it is available for us to see the image. There are no phosphors that can be used to light the crystals in an LCD. And the LCD, being sleek and thin, requires lot less power to operate. And there is no radiation vented out of the screens like in regular televisions. Unlike regular CRTS, the beams are not scanned in an LCD and the pixels are turned on and off on its own given the requirement of the image created. It can display images at 120th of a second similar at 24th, 30th and 60th of a second. In addition to this, because the LCD television does not have its own light, the pixel chip needs to be backlit. The picture tube in an LCD is equally sleek unlike the regular TV sets so it can be easily wall mounted.

Since 2007, once it surpassed the sales in comparison to the CRT based televisions across the world, the sales graph has only seen a rise. Given the variety of sizes it is available in, the LCD is proving to be a major competition to all those who manufacture large screen television sets.

LCD television has by far taken over outdoor advertising as well. This is because today, outdoor advertising is more than just print advertising. LCD screens constantly screen new ads, discounts etc. these can be seen at cafes, hotels, lobbies of the airports and many such public places.
